Bombs Away

Bath Bombs

In January of 2021, Maria needed to get creative in doing occupational therapy with Landon. Occupational therapy was boring and it hurt. There needed to be an incentive for him to put in the work. Landon didn’t like to do things if it just didn’t make sense.

Maria brought up the idea of making bath bombs. Landon loved baths, and even more, he loved bath bombs with surprises in them. He was also a businessman at heart. He wanted to make money, but with this money, he wanted it to have a purpose. During his time at St. Jude Children’s Research Hosptial, he got to know the Happy Cart and loved grabbing a toy off of it. It provided some distraction from the hard day.

He decided he wanted to make bath bombs, sell them, then purchase toys for the Happy Cart. And through this, his business began!

Bombs Away Bath Bombs is continuing still! Logan is still the Vice President and oversees the selection of prizes to go in the bath bombs as well as the purchasing of toys for the Happy Cart.

Through a bit of trial and error, we think we’ve found the recipe for making the perfect bath bombs. Maybe you need to find a creative way to do occupational therapy, or maybe you just love bath bombs! Take this recipe, think about Landon, and say “Bombs Away” when you put your bath bomb in the water!

Landon’s Bath Bomb Recipe

Dry ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • ½ cup cornstarch

  • ½ cup Epsom salt

  • ½ cup citric acid (Add this LAST!)

Wet ingredients:

  • 4 ½ tbsp coconut oil

  • 1 tsp or 50 drops of favorite essential oil (Landon preferred cotton candy)

  • 40 drops of soap colorant

  • 1 tbsp water

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Large bowl

  • Small bowl

  • Whisk

  • Bath bomb molds

  • Bath bomb shrink wrap paper or other air-tight containers/bags

  • Small toy/surprises (something able to get wet)

Directions:

  1. Add your baking soda to your mixing bowl - make sure there are no clumps.

  2. Add the cornstarch and Epsom salt and mix well. You can use your hands!

  3. In a separate, small bowl, mix your wet ingredients together. Use a spoon or small whisk to get your color blended well.

  4. Slowly add the wet to your dry ingredients. Mix lightly with your whisk or hands, just to incorporate a little.

  5. Now, add your citric acid. (If you add the citric acid before the wet, everything fizzes and you ruin the fun fizz effect of your bath bomb!)

  6. Now, we move fast so the mix doesn’t dry.

  7. Fill half of your mold with the mixture.

  8. Add a small toy surprise.

  9. Fill the other half of your mold a little higher than the other.

  10. Push the two sides together, really tight. (This is great work on those hand muscles!)

  11. Flip the bath bomb over to where you can take the top off. If it comes off smooth, you’ve done it perfectly! Clean the sides up a bit to get the excess off. Put the top back on.

  12. Let it sit for 24 - 48 hours to dry.

  13. Wrap it if you do not plan to use it immediately. (We use shrink wrap bags, but you can use any air-tight container or bag.)

Tips:

If you want to have two colors, double the recipe, and color each half. Get creative! This can be messy, but we’ve decided it was a clean mess. However, you may want to protect your work surface to make cleanup easier.

This makes about 3 bath bombs.
